SLAVIC 189: The Other Russia

A Harvard Engaged Scholarship Project at the Jewish Community for the Elderly

In the fall semester of 2017, Harvard students of Professor Stephanie Sandler’s “Slavic 189: The Other Russia: Twenty-First Century Films, Fictions, States of Mind” visited the Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly at the Ulin House campus in Brighton, MA.

There were a total of four visits, where the students got to socialize with a group of residents, form connections, ask questions, and listen.

After these visits we asked the students to create a project that would show an awareness of its context in a larger community than academic assignments usually reach. We asked them to think about how the meetings and, potentially, the final project itself, benefit the residents they had come to know and how meeting them has benefitted their own knowledge of contemporary Russia.

At the end of the semester, the students presented these projects to the JCHE community. Our hope was to engage in an exchange with the community and become co-creators of knowledge.

This site is a place to collect the students’ final projects and make them permanently available to the JCHE residents.
